Day 13 – Cairns

We drove up to the town of Kuranda this morning up in the Atherton Tablelands, about 35km out of Cairns. It was a similar drive as the one up to Port Douglas, a long narrow winding road up through the mountains for about 12km.

We started off with a visit to the Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve. They have lots of different animals including:

  • Hippos, rhinos, lions, tigers, brown bears, cheetahs, deers, monkeys, pygmy hippos, crocodiles, alpacas, ostriches, otters, lemurs and dingoes

  • We got to see the feeding of the hippos, otters, brown bears and lions. The lions were the best. They placed the meat just in front of us (on the other side of the fence of course) and then released the lions from their cages and they came running really fast down the hill and snatched the meat.

The brown bears were swimming in their pool and as they were being fed their peanut butter (hidden inside sticks of bamboo), Ryan exclaimed “I want go swimming too!”.

After the wildlife park we took Ryan through the Kuranda Butterfly Sanctuary. Dorothy The Dinosaur (yes, from The Wiggles whose every song is now seared into my memory) likes to dance with butterflies and Ryan has been asking to see some....

It was actually quite good with a little rainforest setting inside a giant dome net with hundreds of large colourful butterflies flying around and landing on you.

After the Butterfly Sanctuary we had some homemade ice cream – butterfly nectar mixed with local fruits to make a kind of ice cream / sorbet mix. A little odd, but quite nice.

And what day would be complete without another visit to the water park!?!? Ryan has been asserting his new found independence (no routine now so he’s starting making up his own) and wanting to go down the water slides by himself.

P.S. There was no butterfly nectar in the homemade ice cream – that’s disgusting and shame on those of you who took it seriously!!

Quiz Question #13 – Which wild animal in Africa is responsible for more deaths of humans than any other?

Quiz Question #14 –How many eggs can a female butterfly lay in her life?

Quiz Question #15 – How many butterfly species are in the world (to the nearest thousand)?

Accommodation – Big 4 Cairns Coconut Holiday Resort
